Joe Barton is a lifelong resident and graduate (2002) of the Hoosic Valley School district. In 1989 he met his wife, Jeni, in Mr. Martin’s kindergarten class. They live in Valley Falls with their 2 children, ages 7 and 5, who are currently enrolled in Hoosic Valley. An avid outdoorsman, Joe enjoys spending time getting his children involved in and excited about nature and agriculture.
He studied Agricultural Business at SUNY Cobleskill and in 2007 started working for Stewart’s Shops as a CDL truck driver. After 9 years with the company he transitioned into the role of Hauling Department Manager where he currently oversees 115 drivers and over 50 CDL vehicles. In addition to educating employees on safety and transportation Joe has also assisted them in developing an understanding of ever-changing computer software and technology. He acts as a liaison to the Human Resources Department by ensuring driver qualifications and compliance. Joe continuously engages in professional development to keep the department current with state and federal mandates. He has worked in close co-ordination with the Accounting Department. Last year Joe was able to single-handedly decrease department spending by over $90, 000 through his innovative planning and routing efficiency by implementing advanced routing software.
Joe has a strong appreciation for this community. He would like to see everyone (himself included) held to a high level of accountability to ensure the best opportunities for our children while remaining fiscally responsible. Joe understands the importance of providing support to our teachers to enable them to be effective educators. As a new member Joe would bring a fresh perspective to the board and inspire change. Above all he hopes to lead by example and excite parents and community members to take an active role in our children’s future.
Margaret Rice has resided in Schaghticoke for the past 20 years with her husband and six children. Their oldest daughter will graduate Hoosic Valley this year and their youngest son is 4 years old and will enter kindergarten in 2019. She received her Bachelor of Science from Manhattan College in 1992 and her master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University in 1994. Margaret is a Physical Therapist and small business owner of 3 e-commerce websites including Your Therapy Source Inc, which specializes in special education, pediatric occupational and physical therapy resources. She is an active member of her community teaching religious education, coaching youth basketball and coordinating Hoosic Valley Odyssey of the Mind.
If elected, Margaret will work hard to help guide Hoosic Valley Central School to reach its full potential. Currently, she is highly concerned about the direction our school district is headed with regards to student performance and morale of the staff and community. Hoosic Valley has many strengths that we need to build upon to reverse the current trend of declining student performance.
Hoosic Valley Central School District needs to:
• establish SMART goals for a clear and measurable path to student success.
• improve morale and atmosphere for students, staff, parents and community members.
• set goals for behavioral expectations for all students resulting in a positive learning environment.
I am a lifelong resident of the Hoosic Valley School District. In 1990 my business partner and I opened Quality Retail Systems in a garage in Johnsonville. Since then, the business has successfully made it through the recession and has recently expanded to a second location in Buffalo, NY. Today, QRS is located on Route 67, right across from the high school, employs, on average, 40-50 dedicated and hard-working people, the majority of them being Hoosic Valley alumni including the two owners and comptroller, my oldest daughter Mandi. I have recently passed the baton to a new owner but continue to stay informed and consulted on the progress and success of the company.
My wife Linda is a teaching assistant in the third grade at Hoosic Valley who reminds me quite frequently of how blessed she is to work with the children and her colleagues in an environment she looks forward to each day. I have two teachers in my family as well. My daughter Melanie teaches second grade at Waterford Halfmoon and her husband Tony is a high school math teacher at Saratoga Springs. My youngest daughter Melissa and her husband Josh own and operate two 16 Handles locations (check out the free froyo at the post prom party!).
I have coached HVAA travel softball, Hoosic Valley varsity softball, the College of St. Rose softball and currently coach Miss Shen travel softball where my oldest granddaughter Haylie plays travel ball.
As a school board member my record speaks for itself. Throughout my tenure the District has seen an increase in technology, academic programs and professional development, while the taxpayers have seen a DECREASE in their taxes. As I seek re-election to the Board my goal is to continue this trend, moving Hoosic Valley forward, preparing students for higher education and/or equipping them with the necessary skills to fill the jobs so highly sought after by employers without losing sight of our taxpayers.
